Overheard

Lab rat #1: What was the IT guy doing here?
Lab rat #2: Connecting the refrigerator to the Internet... There's a sentence I never thought I'd say.

Free Programs - File Utilities

This is not exactly a free program that you need to download, it is better than that. It is a free online service to which you can upload a file for conversion to a different format. No installing risky software that you'll probably only use once or twice.

Check out Zamzar

There are many conversion types available, far too many for me to name them all but you can find them here

I've just used it to convert a pdf file to Word. It was so easy and quick. 4 simple steps and then they email you a link to the converted document which you can then download. No time at all and I had the file and best of all no new software installed.

Here are just some of the format conversions you can do...

  • doc - Microsoft Word Document -> pdf, html, png, txt, odt
  • pdf -> doc, rtf, html, odt, txt, png
  • jpg -> bmp, gif, ico, png, thumbnail, tiff
  • mp3 -> wma, aac, ac3, flac, ogg, m4a, mp4
  • wav -> mp3, wmp, ogg, mp4
  • wma (windows media) -> mp3, mp4, wav, ogg
Not to mention heaps of video converting formats. Hoenstly there are just too many to tell you them all here and if you need or want to convert a file then I'm sure you will find you can do it with Zamzar

[Update 8-12-07]I've just converted a 1.1MB Word document to pdf using Zamzar and am not impressed. First of all it took about half an hour to get my email with the download link and secondly the pdf file size was over 5MB!!
